A tragic incident has unfolded at one of Germany’s newest tourist attractions after three people died following a fall from the Harzturm observation tower in the Harz Mountains.
Emergency services were called to the 65-metre-high structure on Thursday afternoon after reports that three people had fallen from the tower. Despite a large emergency response, all three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. German authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Harzturm, located near Torfhaus in the Harz National Park, has been closed to visitors while police continue their investigation.
Investigation underway
Authorities have confirmed that the victims were two adults and one child. At this stage, investigators have stated there is no indication of a technical failure or third-party involvement.
Although the exact circumstances remain under investigation, German media report that police are considering the possibility of a murder-suicide. Officials have stressed that the investigation is ongoing and that no final conclusions have yet been reached.
The area surrounding the tower remained cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams examined the scene.
A landmark attraction in the Harz Mountains
The Harzturm has quickly become one of the Harz region’s best-known visitor attractions since opening. Constructed from a combination of timber and steel, the tower rises 65 metres above the surrounding landscape, making it Germany’s tallest observation tower of its kind.
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Harz Mountains from two observation platforms, while a glass-floored skywalk offers a dramatic look straight down to the forest below.
One of the attraction’s signature features is a 110-metre-long enclosed slide that allows visitors to descend the tower in a matter of seconds instead of taking the stairs or elevator.
The project was first announced several years ago but experienced multiple construction delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions and rising construction costs before eventually opening to the public.
Tower temporarily closed
Following Thursday’s tragedy, the operator has closed the attraction until further notice. No announcement has yet been made regarding when the tower will reopen.
The incident has shocked both the local community and visitors to the Harz region, where the observation tower had rapidly established itself as one of the area’s most recognisable tourist landmarks. Authorities are expected to provide further information once their investigation has been completed.
