One of Italy’s largest theme parks has officially cancelled its entire 2026 operating season, but the reason has nothing to do with mechanical issues or storm damage.
Etnaland has confirmed that it will remain closed for the rest of the year because the park is still under judicial seizure as part of an ongoing environmental investigation. Although management had hoped to welcome guests later in the season, it says there is now simply not enough time to complete the extensive work required before reopening.
The announcement brings an end to any remaining hopes that the popular Sicilian theme park would resume operations in 2026.
Park Unable to Prepare for the Season
According to Etnaland, the legal restrictions have prevented staff from carrying out the essential work that normally takes place before a theme park opens.
This includes the annual maintenance and certification of attractions, operational testing, staff recruitment and training, and preparations across the resort. Even if the judicial seizure were lifted immediately, park officials say the amount of work still required makes a reopening this year impossible.
As a result, Etnaland has shifted its focus entirely to preparing for the 2027 season.
Environmental Investigation Continues
The closure is linked to an ongoing criminal investigation by Italian authorities into alleged environmental offences.
Prosecutors claim that waste generated by the resort was illegally burned and buried on nearby land over a period of several years. Investigators are also examining allegations relating to wastewater treatment and environmental permits.
As part of the investigation, authorities placed the park under preventive judicial seizure earlier this year, preventing normal operations from resuming while the legal process continues.
It is important to note that these allegations remain under investigation and have not resulted in a final court ruling.
Etnaland Denies Wrongdoing
Etnaland has consistently rejected suggestions that the investigation concerns the safety of its rides or the wellbeing of its guests.
The company says it is fully cooperating with the authorities and maintains that visitor safety has never been compromised. It also stresses that the current closure is the result of legal proceedings rather than operational safety concerns.
Management has expressed hope that the situation can be resolved in time for a full reopening in 2027.
A Major Blow for Italian Tourism
The cancellation of the entire 2026 season is a significant setback for both Etnaland and tourism in Sicily.
Since opening in 2001, Etnaland has grown into one of Italy’s largest amusement destinations, combining a theme park, water park and a wide range of family attractions. Every summer, the resort attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from across Italy and beyond.
With the park now officially remaining closed for the rest of the year, attention turns to the outcome of the legal investigation and whether one of Italy’s best-known theme parks will be able to welcome guests again in 2027.
