Construction of the future Universal United Kingdom Resort has reached another important milestone, with large-scale soil stripping now getting underway across the Bedford site.
New documents published by Bedford Borough Council reveal that temporary road closures will come into effect to allow thousands of tonnes of topsoil to be moved as preparation for the next phase of construction. While visitors will not yet see roller coaster foundations or themed buildings rising from the ground, the work represents one of the biggest steps forward since the project was officially announced.
Temporary Road Closures to Support Construction
According to a public notice issued by Bedford Borough Council, sections of Woburn Road and Manor Road will be subject to temporary traffic restrictions from 27 July until early October 2026.
The closures are needed to allow construction vehicles to transport topsoil from what Universal refers to as the “Core Zone”—the future location of the theme park—to the “Lake Zone”, an area earmarked for future expansion and temporary storage.
Emergency access and access for local residents will be maintained throughout the works, while signed diversion routes will be in place for motorists.
What Is Soil Stripping?
Before major construction projects can begin, contractors must first remove the upper layer of soil covering the site.
Because the land has been used for agriculture for many years, the topsoil contains grass, roots, vegetation and organic material that cannot support heavy buildings or ride foundations.
The material is carefully removed, stored and later reused in landscaping projects elsewhere on the site. Once the topsoil has been stripped away, engineers can begin reshaping the land and preparing it for permanent infrastructure.
Although it may not look particularly exciting, this is a crucial stage in transforming farmland into a world-class theme park resort.
Preparing for Heavy Construction
Removing the topsoil is only the beginning of a much larger engineering programme.
The next phases are expected to include large-scale earthworks to level different sections of the site, installation of drainage systems, underground utilities, new roads and pathways, and eventually the foundations for future attractions, hotels and support buildings.
These works will create the platform needed for vertical construction to begin in the years ahead.
Another Sign That the Project Is Gathering Pace
The start of the earthworks follows several significant developments over recent weeks.
Universal recently confirmed the official name of the destination as Universal United Kingdom Resort and launched a Talent Community for future employees, signalling that workforce planning is already underway.
Together with the latest construction activity, these announcements demonstrate that the project is steadily progressing from planning into full site preparation.
Universal United Kingdom Still Targeting 2031 Opening
The Universal United Kingdom Resort is planned for a site near Bedford, approximately one hour north of London.
Current proposals include a major theme park, a hotel and a large retail, dining and entertainment district, making it Universal’s first full-scale theme park resort in Europe.
Although guests will still need to wait several years before attractions begin to take shape, the start of major earthworks marks another visible step towards the resort’s planned opening in 2031.
