Universal Orlando has confirmed that Fast & Furious: Supercharged will permanently close on August 10, bringing an end to one of the most controversial attractions in the resort’s history.
The ride opened at Universal Studios Florida in 2018 as part of an expansion of the park’s San Francisco area. Less than eight years later, it is preparing to make way for an entirely new attraction, widely expected to be a large-scale roller coaster that will dramatically reshape the section of the park it currently occupies.
The closure marks a rare example of a major theme park attraction being retired after such a relatively short lifespan.
A troubled history from the beginning
Fast & Furious: Supercharged was originally developed for Universal Studios Hollywood as the finale to the Studio Tour before being adapted into a standalone attraction for Florida.
Guests boarded “party buses” and joined Dominic Toretto and his crew on a mission through the streets of San Francisco. The attraction combined physical sets with large projection screens and motion simulation effects, culminating in a high-speed chase sequence involving franchise villain Owen Shaw.
However, the ride struggled to gain the popularity Universal had anticipated. Critics frequently pointed to the limited physical environments, heavy reliance on screens and story structure as weaknesses compared to other Universal attractions. Among theme park enthusiasts, it quickly developed a reputation as one of the resort’s least successful modern additions.
While Universal has never publicly discussed attendance figures for individual attractions, Fast & Furious: Supercharged consistently ranked among the most criticized rides in guest surveys and enthusiast polls.
The end had been coming for months
Rumours surrounding the attraction’s future intensified earlier this year when permits began appearing for work in the San Francisco section of Universal Studios Florida.
Construction activity and site surveys led many observers to speculate that Universal was preparing a replacement project. Those reports gained credibility when multiple sources indicated that the company was planning a major roller coaster for the site.
The official closure announcement now confirms that Universal is moving forward with a significant redevelopment of the area.
While the company has not yet revealed replacement plans, construction walls are expected to appear shortly after the attraction closes.
A franchise that never found its place
The closure is particularly notable given the continued success of the Fast & Furious film franchise.
The movie series has generated billions of dollars worldwide and remains one of Universal Pictures’ most valuable properties. Yet translating that success into a theme park attraction proved more challenging than expected.
Many fans argued that the franchise’s focus on street racing and high-speed action would have been better suited to a roller coaster than a screen-based motion attraction. Ironically, the replacement project now expected for the site appears likely to deliver exactly that type of experience.
If current reports prove accurate, Fast & Furious could finally receive the ride system many visitors felt it deserved from the beginning.
A new era for Universal Studios Florida
The timing of the closure comes during a period of major expansion for Universal Destinations & Experiences.
Following the opening of Epic Universe in 2025, Universal has increasingly shifted its attention back to its existing Florida parks. The removal of Fast & Furious: Supercharged creates one of the largest redevelopment sites currently available inside Universal Studios Florida and offers the company an opportunity to introduce a major new attraction without expanding the park’s footprint.
The closure also continues a broader trend within the industry. Attractions heavily dependent on projection screens and simulator technology have increasingly been replaced by experiences featuring larger physical environments, more advanced ride systems and stronger repeatability.
Fast & Furious: Supercharged was once intended to be a flagship attraction for Universal Studios Florida. Instead, it became one of the shortest-lived major investments in the park’s recent history.
Its closure on August 10 closes a chapter that many Universal fans had expected to end for years. The attention now shifts to what comes next.
