Universal Orlando Resort has shared its closest look yet at one of the signature elements of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, offering fans a detailed view of the roller coaster’s towering 170-foot (52-metre) spike as construction continues ahead of the attraction’s 2027 debut.
The newly released video highlights the immense scale of the vertical spike, which has rapidly become one of the most recognisable features on the Universal Studios Florida skyline. Rising above the park and visible from CityWalk, the structure represents the dramatic climax of the new high-speed coaster that is replacing Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit.
A signature moment unlike any other
The spike is more than just a visual landmark. During the ride, trains will accelerate toward the towering vertical track before climbing nearly 170 feet into the air. As the train approaches the highest point, the individual ride vehicles will rotate 180 degrees, leaving riders facing backwards before the train reverses direction and plunges back down the spike.
The sequence is designed to recreate the sensation of high-speed drifting that defines the Fast & Furious film franchise, combining forward and backward launches with rotating ride vehicles capable of spinning independently throughout the course.
Universal showcases construction progress
The newly released footage gives guests an unusually close perspective of the completed spike, travelling from ground level toward its summit. Earlier this month, construction crews topped off the structure, marking one of the biggest milestones since work began on the attraction.
Although the spike is now structurally complete, work continues throughout the remainder of the layout as additional track, support structures and ride systems are installed.
Replacing a park icon
Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift occupies the former site of Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, which closed after serving guests for more than sixteen years. The new Intamin coaster is expected to become one of Universal Orlando’s most technologically advanced attractions.
The coaster will feature approximately 4,100 feet (1,250 metres) of track and reach speeds of up to 72 mph (116 km/h), making it the fastest roller coaster in Universal Destinations & Experiences’ global portfolio. Riders will board vehicles inspired by the Fast & Furious films, with each car able to rotate independently by up to 360 degrees to simulate cinematic drifting sequences.
Opening in 2027
Construction has accelerated significantly in recent months, with large sections of track now installed across the former Rip Ride Rockit site. Universal continues to target a 2027 opening for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, which is expected to become one of the headline attractions at Universal Studios Florida and one of the most innovative roller coasters ever built by the resort.
