The transformation of Universal Islands of Adventure has reached another significant milestone as demolition crews have begun tearing down the former Poseidon’s Fury attraction.
New aerial photographs reveal that heavy machinery is now actively dismantling the iconic show building, marking the beginning of the end for one of the park’s original attractions. The demolition is part of Universal Orlando’s phased removal of The Lost Continent, which is making way for an entirely new themed land.
Poseidon’s Fury Building Now Being Torn Down
While demolition has been progressing across The Lost Continent for several months, Poseidon’s Fury had remained largely intact until now.
That has changed dramatically.
Crews have opened up the rear of the massive show building, with excavators tearing through structural supports and exterior walls. Large piles of steel beams, insulation and concrete debris can now be seen surrounding the attraction, while sections of the building have already been completely removed.
The work also confirms that the attraction’s unique show building will not simply be repurposed for a future experience, as some fans had hoped.
An Iconic Attraction Comes to an End
Poseidon’s Fury opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999 and quickly became one of the park’s signature attractions.
Instead of a traditional ride, guests embarked on a guided walkthrough adventure filled with elaborate special effects, including fire, water projections and the attraction’s famous rotating water tunnel, which created the illusion of walking through a solid wall of water.
Although the attraction permanently closed in 2023, many fans believed parts of the impressive temple façade or show building might survive as part of a future redevelopment.
The latest demolition work now makes that increasingly unlikely.
The Lost Continent Continues to Vanish
Poseidon’s Fury is only the latest casualty in the ongoing transformation of The Lost Continent.
The former Eighth Voyage of Sindbad stunt theatre has already been completely demolished, while the Mystic Fountain has been removed from the land. Universal carefully preserved the fountain’s famous talking face before demolition began, suggesting it may eventually return in another location.
Several restaurants, shops and decorative elements have also disappeared in recent weeks as construction crews steadily clear the site.
At present, Mythos Restaurant, Fire Eater’s Grill and a small retail location remain among the last operating venues within the area.
What Will Replace The Lost Continent?
Universal has confirmed that The Lost Continent is being removed to make way for a new themed land, but has not announced what will replace it.
Among fans, Pokémon remains the strongest rumoured candidate, with speculation pointing to attractions, restaurants and shops inspired by the globally popular franchise. The rumours gained additional momentum after Universal and The Pokémon Company announced an expanded partnership to bring Pokémon experiences to Universal destinations around the world.
Despite the widespread speculation, Universal has yet to officially reveal any details about the future of the site.
A New Chapter for Islands of Adventure
The removal of Poseidon’s Fury marks another emotional moment for long-time Universal fans.
Over the past two decades, The Lost Continent has gradually shrunk as The Wizarding World of Harry Potter expanded into the area. Dragon Challenge replaced the original Dueling Dragons attraction before eventually making way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, while Poseidon’s Fury and The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad both closed years ago.
With demolition now accelerating, one of Islands of Adventure’s original lands is rapidly disappearing.
Although Universal has not yet revealed what comes next, the pace of construction suggests preparations for the resort’s next major expansion are now well underway.
