A new type of theme park is opening its gates in the United Kingdom. On July 18, Kynren – The Storied Lands welcomes its first visitors in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, becoming the country’s first attraction built entirely around large-scale live entertainment instead of traditional rides.
The new daytime attraction expands the award-winning Kynren – An Epic Tale of England night show into a full-day experience featuring multiple productions inspired by British history, folklore and legend. Its opening comes as French entertainment giant Puy du Fou continues to pursue plans for its own UK park, setting the stage for a unique rivalry in the growing market for immersive historical attractions.
Five live shows in one day
Unlike a conventional theme park, Kynren – The Storied Lands has no roller coasters or mechanical rides. Instead, visitors follow a timed itinerary that guides them through five live productions and immersive experiences spread across the park.
The opening lineup includes Land of the Vikings, featuring large-scale battle scenes; The Trusty Steed, a medieval horse stunt spectacular; The Legend of the Wear, a water show based on the legendary Lambton Worm; The Lost Feather, showcasing more than 250 birds in flight; and Victorian Imaginariums, an interactive experience inspired by Victorian Britain.
The attraction is operated as a scheduled experience, with guests receiving a personalised route through the park to ensure they can see every performance during their visit.
More expansions already planned
The Storied Lands is only the first phase of a much larger development. Additional live shows and themed areas are already planned for future years, with an indoor Victorian Village experience expected to be the next major expansion. Longer-term concepts inspired by British legends, including Robin Hood, King Arthur and the Tudors, have also been announced as part of the park’s long-term vision.
The original Kynren evening spectacular will continue to operate on selected nights alongside the new daytime park, allowing visitors to combine both experiences in a single visit.
A challenger to Puy du Fou?
The opening of Kynren arrives at an interesting moment for the UK attractions industry. Puy du Fou, widely regarded as the global benchmark for historical live entertainment, is progressing plans for its own British park near Bicester in Oxfordshire.
If approved, the proposed £600 million development would feature 13 live shows, four historical villages, three themed hotels and no traditional rides, closely following the successful formula already established at Puy du Fou’s parks in France and Spain. The first phase is currently targeted to open in 2029.
Although Kynren and Puy du Fou are separate organisations, they now find themselves targeting a similar audience: visitors looking for immersive storytelling, spectacular live performances and historical experiences rather than roller coasters.
With Kynren opening three years ahead of its potential competitor, the attraction has an opportunity to establish itself as the UK’s leading live-action show park before Puy du Fou enters the market. Whether there will ultimately be room for two large-scale historical entertainment destinations remains to be seen, but the growing interest in this ride-free concept suggests a new chapter is beginning for the British theme park industry.
