When you think of theme park attractions, you probably picture roller coasters, log flumes and Ferris wheels. Karls Erlebnis-Dorf has other ideas.
Across its growing collection of parks in Germany, the family attraction operator has built an astonishing lineup of rides themed around toilets, sausages, potatoes, jam jars and even giant döner kebabs. While most parks invest in pirates or dinosaurs, Karls has embraced the wonderfully bizarre—and visitors absolutely love it.
Here are some of the strangest attractions you’ll find across the different Karls Erlebnis-Dörfer.
PipiKakaLand: An Entire Land Dedicated to Toilets
Perhaps the most outrageous themed area of them all is PipiKakaLand at Karls’ newest location in Loxstedt.
Everything here revolves around toilets and plumbing. Guests can race down a giant toilet slide, crawl through oversized drainpipes, cool off in the “Rohrbruch” splash area and even enjoy ice cream served from a giant toilet. When the area officially opened, Karls even replaced the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony with a ribbon made of toilet paper.
It’s exactly as ridiculous as it sounds—and that’s the point.
Welcome to BockwurstLand
At Karls Döbeln, Germany’s favourite sausage becomes the star of an entire themed land.
The area features attractions including the Bockwurstschleuder (Bockwurst Catapult), the Senfrutsche (Mustard Slide) and giant decorative sausages scattered throughout the area. Even the nearby goat enclosure joins in the fun with the name “Ich hab Bock”—a German expression that doubles as a pun involving goats.
Only Karls could build an entire themed area around sausages and mustard.
Ride a Giant Strawberry Döner
One of the chain’s newest attractions may also be one of its strangest.
At Karls Elstal, guests can board the Erdbeer-Döner, a spinning family ride themed around an enormous rotating kebab. Instead of meat, however, the giant spit is covered in strawberries, perfectly matching the company’s famous berry branding.
It’s a ride that would look completely out of place almost anywhere else—but somehow fits perfectly at Karls.
Coffee Pots, Jam Jars and Giant Spoons
Ordinary household objects become attractions throughout the parks.
Visitors can fly through the air in oversized coffee pots, spin around inside giant jam jars or climb aboard the Löffel-Jet, a ride themed entirely around oversized spoons. Karls even displays what it describes as the world’s largest collection of coffee pots, proving that almost anything can become an attraction with enough imagination.
Potato Sacks Become Thrill Rides
Potatoes are another recurring theme throughout Karls Erlebnis-Dorf.
Instead of using traditional mats, visitors slide downhill while sitting on authentic potato sacks. The Kartoffelsackrutsche has become one of the chain’s signature attractions and appears in several parks, each with its own local twist.
It’s simple, surprisingly fun and unmistakably Karls.
Tractors, Flying Barns and East German Farming
The unusual theming doesn’t stop there.
Guests can ride the Treggerbahn, named after the North German dialect word for tractor, or board the Fliegender Kuhstall, a flying family ride themed as a barn full of cows.
Elsewhere, Karls even pays tribute to East Germany’s agricultural history with attractions inspired by former farming cooperatives, proving that almost any subject can become entertaining in the right hands.
Why It Works
On paper, attractions themed around toilets, currywurst, potatoes and coffee pots sound like ideas that should never have made it past the drawing board. Yet Karls Erlebnis-Dorf has built an enormously successful brand by embracing exactly that kind of eccentric creativity.
Rather than competing with Europe’s biggest theme parks through record-breaking roller coasters, Karls has created experiences that are memorable because they’re unlike anything else. Every attraction tells a story rooted in German culture, farming, regional food or everyday life, often with a generous dose of humour.
