Work is continuing on Disney Villains Land, the major new expansion announced for Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. Although vertical construction has not yet started, significant progress has been made behind Frontierland, where crews have spent recent months preparing the site for future development.
Disney first revealed Villains Land during the D23 fan event in 2024. The new area will be dedicated to Disney’s animated villains and is planned to include two major attractions, themed dining locations and retail outlets. An opening date has not yet been announced.
Large-scale site work underway
The future land is being built beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and behind sections of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Over the past year, crews have cleared large portions of the construction site, removing existing infrastructure and preparing the area for future buildings and attractions. Recent aerial images show ongoing grading work, with fresh sand and earthworks helping define the locations of future structures.
Permit filings have also provided a clearer picture of the project’s scale. Updated plans filed earlier this year indicate a construction area spanning dozens of acres and reveal the footprint of several large show buildings expected to house the land’s attractions.
While much of the current activity remains hidden from guests, the pace of site preparation suggests Disney is steadily moving forward with the project. Construction activity has become increasingly visible in areas surrounding Frontierland as the resort continues work on one of the largest expansions in Magic Kingdom’s history.
Few official details released
Disney has released only limited information about the project since its announcement. The company has confirmed that the land will feature Disney villains from across its animated films, but attraction names, ride systems and a timeline for opening have not yet been revealed.
Concept artwork released by Disney shows a dark fantasy environment dominated by villain-inspired architecture and a large dragon resembling Maleficent in her dragon form. Beyond that, Disney has remained largely silent on specific details.
Reports published earlier this year suggested that the land could feature characters including Maleficent, Ursula, Jafar, Hades and Captain Hook, although Disney has not officially confirmed which villains will appear in the attractions.
Part of a wider Magic Kingdom expansion
Villains Land is being developed alongside Piston Peak National Park, a new Cars-themed area that is also under construction beyond Frontierland. Together, the projects represent the largest expansion ever undertaken at Magic Kingdom.
For now, construction remains focused on preparing the site. However, with clearing work largely complete and grading continuing across the future land, attention is increasingly turning to when the first attraction structures will begin to rise above the construction walls.
