Shedd Aquarium to Open New Immersion Theater in 2026

Shedd Aquarium - SimEx-Iwerks, in partnership with Shedd Aquarium, plans to launch a new Immersion Theater in Spring 2026 at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois. This 4D theater will provide visitors with an opportunity to engage with aquatic life through advanced technologies designed to create a multi-sensory experience.

Technical Features and Design

The Immersion Theater will utilize advanced technology to simulate the aquatic environment. The design includes newly developed seat features that will offer sensory effects such as wind, mist, and scent. Dynamic lighting systems and large-scale underwater visuals will be used to enhance the visual experience. The theater will also feature interactive augmented reality elements for an educational experience.

Pre-Show Area

The new Immersion Theater will include a redesigned pre-show area. This space will have augmented reality animals, along with specialized lighting and imagery, serving as an introduction to the main attraction. These components aim to provide visitors with an interactive and educational introduction to aquatic life.

Collaboration and Development

The Immersion Theater project continues nearly two decades of collaboration between SimEx-Iwerks and Shedd Aquarium. Both organizations have previously developed educational experiences. SimEx-Iwerks is expanding into nature-based family entertainment products, focusing on creating experiences that connect audiences with nature.

The theater will be a new feature of Shedd Aquarium, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and interactive elements. The opening is anticipated as a significant addition to Chicago’s aquarium offerings.
