Plopsaland Belgium has officially expanded its dining offering with the opening of the all-new Piratengrill, a heavily themed family restaurant inspired by the world of Piet Piraat. Replacing the ageing restaurant of the same name, the new venue is considerably larger, more immersive and introduces an entirely new dining concept to Belgium’s most-visited theme park.
The opening marks another milestone in Plopsaland Resort’s ongoing transformation, which includes major investments in new accommodation, entertainment and the future Plopsaland Plaza development.
A pirate adventure from the moment guests arrive
The new Piratengrill immediately stands out thanks to its elaborate architecture. Guests enter through the stern of a large pirate ship that appears to have crashed into the building, while weathered stone walls, wooden barrels, cargo crates and nautical details create the atmosphere of a bustling pirate harbour.
Inside, the immersive design continues with timber beams, maritime decorations and themed dining rooms inspired by Piet Piraat and his crew. Outside, a spacious terrace provides additional seating overlooking the surrounding area of the park.
The previous Piratengrill had served guests for many years but was demolished after the building had reached the end of its operational life. The replacement is significantly larger and has been designed to become one of Plopsaland’s signature dining locations.
A new table-service experience
Unlike its predecessor, the new Piratengrill operates as a full-service restaurant, allowing guests to enjoy a more relaxed dining experience during their visit.
The menu focuses on grilled specialities prepared over a genuine wood-fired grill, with dishes designed for families to share. Options include grilled chicken, ribs, premium meat selections and children’s meals, alongside a range of side dishes and desserts. Guests can reserve a table in advance, helping to reduce waiting times during busy periods.
The restaurant also remains open after the theme park closes, welcoming guests staying at the Plopsaland Theater Hotel, Plopsaland Village and other resort accommodations. This reflects Plopsa’s ambition to further develop the destination into a multi-day resort rather than solely a day-visit theme park.
Part of a larger transformation
The opening of Piratengrill forms part of a much broader investment programme currently reshaping Plopsaland Resort.
Construction continues on Plopsaland Plaza, a new entrance district scheduled to open in 2027. The project will introduce a central experience square, additional retail and dining facilities, and the resort’s highly anticipated Flying Theater attraction, which is expected to become one of the park’s biggest new attractions.
Together with the expansion of on-site accommodation and improved visitor facilities, the new restaurant demonstrates Plopsa’s continued focus on enhancing every aspect of the guest experience beyond its rides and shows.
Raising the standard for theme park dining
Over the past decade, theme parks across Europe have increasingly invested in high-quality themed restaurants as an integral part of the visitor experience. Rather than serving purely as places to eat, these venues have become attractions in their own right, combining immersive storytelling with improved food quality and longer guest dwell times.
With its detailed pirate theming, table-service concept and wood-fired cuisine, Piratengrill represents Plopsaland Belgium’s most ambitious restaurant project to date. The new venue not only strengthens the park’s culinary offering but also reinforces its ambition to develop into a fully fledged resort where dining becomes an essential part of the overall experience.
