Guests eager to visit the new Karls Erlebnis-Dorf in Oberhausen will have to wait a little longer. Just days before the attraction was scheduled to welcome its first visitors, operator Karls announced that the opening has been postponed by one week.
The new North Rhine-Westphalia location was originally due to open on July 15. The company has now moved the opening to July 22, citing final construction and preparation work that still needs to be completed before guests can be admitted.
The delay is the latest chapter in a project that has already experienced several setbacks since it was first announced. Karls Erlebnis-Dorf Oberhausen is being developed on the site of the former Sea Life Abenteuer Park, which closed in 2015 after only a short operating period. The redevelopment will bring a permanent family attraction back to the location for the first time in more than a decade.
Final preparations still underway
In a statement, Karls explained that additional time is required to complete work across the site. Recent construction photographs show landscaping, theming and infrastructure work continuing throughout the attraction.
Although many rides and attractions have already been installed, crews remain active across several areas of the park. The company said the additional week will ensure that all facilities are ready for opening day.
First location in North Rhine-Westphalia
Despite the postponement, the project remains one of the most significant expansions in Karls’ history.
The Oberhausen development marks the company’s first location in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state. Located next to Westfield Centro, the attraction combines rides, playgrounds, restaurants and retail experiences under Karls’ well-established Erlebnis-Dorf concept.
Several signature attractions have been confirmed, including the Erdbeer-Raupenbahn family roller coaster and a variety of interactive family attractions. The park will also feature elements developed specifically for the Ruhr region, including the themed Curryversum area.
New life for a former amusement park
The site has a long history within the German attractions industry. It originally operated as CentrO.PARK before becoming Sea Life Abenteuer Park under Merlin Entertainments. Following the park’s closure in 2015, much of the area remained unused.
Karls’ redevelopment transforms the former amusement park into the latest addition to a growing portfolio of Erlebnis-Dörfer across Germany. The company already operates locations in Rövershagen, Elstal, Zirkow, Warnsdorf, Koserow and Döbeln, with further expansion projects under development.
While the postponement means visitors will need to wait another week, the delay is unlikely to diminish interest in one of Germany’s most anticipated regional attraction openings of 2026.
