When Efteling unveiled Baron 1898 in 2015, the Dutch theme park added a major thrill ride to a portfolio largely built around dark rides, fairy tales and immersive storytelling. Fourteen years later, the park is preparing to make an even bigger statement. In 2029, Efteling will open Missie Luminar, a €50 million suspended launch coaster that will become the largest attraction investment in the park’s history.
The new attraction will introduce several firsts for Efteling. Missie Luminar will be the park’s first suspended launch coaster, combining hanging trains with a high-speed launch system. Riders will travel beneath the track rather than above it, reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h during a ride lasting more than two minutes.
More importantly, the project marks a significant addition to Efteling’s relatively small collection of thrill attractions. While the park has expanded in recent years with projects such as Danse Macabre, the Efteling Grand Hotel and the upcoming family free-fall attraction Hooghmoed, a large-scale roller coaster has not been added since Baron 1898.
A new landmark at the park entrance
Missie Luminar will be built near Efteling’s main entrance as part of the Island of the Five Senses, the area that already includes the House of the Five Senses entrance building, Aquanura, the Efteling Theatre and the recently opened Efteling Grand Hotel.
Its location means the coaster will become one of the first attractions visitors encounter upon entering the park. Rather than being hidden in a remote corner, trains will be visible from the entrance area as they race through the layout. According to Efteling, the attraction is intended to become a prominent feature of the resort’s arrival zone.
The decision continues a transformation that has gradually reshaped the front section of the park. Over the past decade, Efteling has invested heavily in this area through new accommodation, infrastructure and entertainment offerings. Missie Luminar will add a major ride component to those developments.
From fairy tales to science and discovery
The attraction’s theme differs noticeably from many of Efteling’s traditional stories. Rather than focusing on folklore, legends or fairy tales, Missie Luminar draws inspiration from scientific exploration and discovery.
Visitors will begin their experience inside a scientific institute, where they receive instructions before boarding the ride vehicle. Efteling describes riders as “missionauts” embarking on an expedition with the goal of breaking through the light barrier. The surrounding area will feature references to natural phenomena, scientific experiments and nineteenth-century discoveries.
Although science has occasionally appeared in Efteling attractions before, it has rarely formed the central theme of a major roller coaster. Missie Luminar therefore introduces a different narrative setting while remaining connected to the park’s broader focus on storytelling.
A new coaster model for Efteling
Industry sources indicate that Missie Luminar will be supplied by Dutch manufacturer Vekoma and use the company’s new Thrill Glider concept. If confirmed, it would become one of the first installations of the model worldwide.
The ride combines several elements that have not previously appeared together at Efteling. The suspended trains hang below the track, while a launch system accelerates riders directly into the course. According to the park, the experience will include multiple moments of weightlessness alongside high-speed sections and directional changes.
The attraction’s vehicles will accommodate 18 riders per train, allowing guests to experience the expedition in relatively large groups.
The biggest investment in park history
With a budget of €50 million, Missie Luminar surpasses all previous Efteling attractions in terms of investment. The project exceeds the reported budgets of both Symbolica and Danse Macabre, which previously shared the record among the park’s attractions.
The scale of the investment reflects the importance of the project within Efteling’s long-term development plans. Construction is expected to take place over the coming years, with the attraction scheduled to open in 2029.
When it opens, Missie Luminar will not only add another roller coaster to the park’s lineup. It will introduce a new ride system, a new thematic direction and a new visual landmark at the entrance of one of Europe’s most visited theme parks. Whether it ultimately joins attractions such as Baron 1898, Symbolica and Danse Macabre among Efteling’s most recognised experiences will become clear once the first trains leave the station in 2029.
