South Dakota - Rapid City has officially approved a major new tourism development: Libertyland USA, a massive themed destination planned for over 300 acres. Once completed, the resort will include a theme park, resort hotel, water park, retail village, campground, and even a residential district.
The project is being backed by a $125 million tax increment financing (TIF) package, and aims to open its first phase in 2026, aligning with the 250th anniversary of the United States. Full build-out is planned through 2030.
Jobs, tourism, and economic impact
Beyond its attractions, Libertyland USA is expected to bring major benefits to the local economy. The project promises the creation of over 2,000 jobs, large-scale infrastructure investment, and a significant boost to tourism and extended-stay visitation in the Black Hills region. City officials describe it as a new anchor destination for western South Dakota.
A long-term vision with local support
While some public debate continues around the project’s scale and timing, Libertyland USA appears to have strong backing from both civic leaders and community stakeholders. The development is being led by Storyland Studios, a creative firm known for its work in location-based entertainment and branded environments.
The approval of Libertyland marks a new chapter for Rapid City, signaling its ambition to become a national player in themed entertainment and resort tourism.
