When Disney unveiled plans for a Spider-Man-themed expansion at Shanghai Disneyland during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2024, details were scarce.
Guests were shown concept art of a new Spider-Man roller coaster and informed that the project would become Shanghai Disneyland’s ninth themed land. Beyond that, Disney revealed little about the attraction, its layout or its construction timeline.
Less than two years later, the project has already become one of the fastest-moving major Disney theme park developments in recent memory. Construction is well underway, track installation has been completed and the new land is rapidly transforming from concept art into a physical addition to Shanghai Disneyland.
Shanghai’s first major Marvel attraction
The Spider-Man project represents an important milestone for Shanghai Disneyland.
While Marvel characters have appeared in entertainment offerings and meet-and-greets, the resort has never featured a major Marvel attraction. The new expansion changes that by introducing a dedicated Spider-Man-themed land anchored by a high-energy thrill coaster. Disney has described the project as the park’s first major Marvel-themed attraction and the third major expansion since Shanghai Disneyland opened in 2016.
The new land is being built adjacent to Zootopia, which opened in late 2023. Once completed, it will become the park’s ninth themed land and further expand the eastern side of the resort.
Disney has also confirmed that the development will include themed restaurants, retail locations and entertainment offerings designed around Spider-Man and his supporting characters.
Construction moves at an unusually rapid pace
Groundbreaking for the new land officially took place in May 2025.
For most theme park projects, that would merely mark the beginning of a long construction process. In Shanghai, however, progress accelerated quickly. By the autumn of 2025, support structures for the coaster were already visible. Track installation began shortly afterwards and continued throughout the first half of 2026.
In June 2026, Shanghai Disney Resort announced that track installation had been completed, marking one of the most significant milestones of the project so far.
The speed of construction has attracted attention among theme park enthusiasts, particularly when compared to the often lengthy timelines associated with large-scale Disney attractions elsewhere in the world.
What kind of coaster is Disney building?
Disney has not yet revealed detailed technical specifications for the attraction.
The company continues to describe it simply as a high-energy thrill coaster featuring Spider-Man. Concept artwork released during D23 showed guests racing through a stylised urban environment inspired by the world of Marvel’s web-slinger.
Recent construction updates have fuelled speculation about the ride’s final name and storyline. Some observers believe the attraction could ultimately carry the name “WEB Launcher,” based on markings and details that have appeared on-site during construction. Disney has not confirmed those reports.
Unlike the Spider-Man attractions at Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris, which are interactive dark rides, Shanghai’s version is expected to be a roller coaster, making it a unique addition to Disney’s global Marvel portfolio.
A key expansion for Shanghai Disneyland
The importance of the project extends beyond the attraction itself.
Shanghai Disneyland has experienced rapid growth since opening in 2016. The resort surpassed 100 million visitors in less than a decade and has continued expanding at a pace unmatched by most Disney parks worldwide. Recent additions have included Toy Story Land, Zootopia and a third on-site hotel currently under construction.
The Spider-Man land continues that expansion strategy by introducing a globally recognised intellectual property while broadening the park’s attraction mix. Marvel remains one of Disney’s strongest franchises internationally, and Shanghai’s new land gives the company a dedicated Marvel presence in mainland China for the first time.
Waiting for the next reveal
Despite the rapid construction progress, many questions remain unanswered.
Disney has yet to announce the attraction’s official name, technical specifications, storyline or opening date. Those details could emerge during future Disney fan events or construction updates.
What is already clear, however, is that the project has moved far beyond the concept-art stage. Less than two years after its announcement, the Spider-Man expansion has become one of the most visible developments at Shanghai Disneyland and is steadily taking its place among the park’s growing collection of themed lands.
For now, the coaster may still be hidden behind construction walls, but the pace of progress suggests that guests may not have to wait much longer before swinging into Shanghai Disneyland’s newest adventure.
