Construction is continuing on Piston Peak National Park, the new Cars-themed expansion under development at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Over the past several months, significant progress has been made on the site beyond Frontierland, where large-scale earthworks, grading and foundation work are now visible.
Piston Peak National Park was announced by Disney as part of the largest expansion project in Magic Kingdom’s history. The area will be inspired by Pixar’s Cars franchise and will feature two new attractions, along with themed environments including a visitor lodge, Ranger headquarters and scenic trails.
Construction site becoming more defined
Recent aerial photographs show that the former Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island area has been transformed into an active construction zone. Crews have spent recent months clearing the site, moving large quantities of earth and installing concrete infrastructure. Retaining walls and utility work are also becoming increasingly visible.
Guests can now spot parts of the construction project from several locations around Frontierland. Work is particularly noticeable from the queue of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, where earthmoving equipment, dirt piles and newly installed concrete structures can be seen.
Construction walls have also expanded throughout the area. New barriers have been installed between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the future expansion site as Disney continues preparations for the next phase of the project.
Part of a wider Frontierland transformation
The development of Piston Peak National Park required the closure of several long-running Magic Kingdom attractions, including Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat and much of the Rivers of America. Demolition and site-clearing work began after those attractions closed in 2025.
Disney has stated that the new area will draw inspiration from the Rocky Mountains, American national parks and the American Frontier. Concept art released by the company shows mountainous landscapes, waterfalls and park-style architecture designed to connect with the surrounding Frontierland area.
Opening date still unannounced
Although construction activity has accelerated in recent months, Disney has not yet announced an opening date for Piston Peak National Park. The company has only confirmed that the land will include two Cars-themed attractions and several supporting facilities.
Piston Peak National Park is being developed alongside Disney Villains Land, another major expansion planned beyond Frontierland. Together, the projects will reshape a significant section of Magic Kingdom over the coming years.
