When Disney announced plans for its first Middle Eastern theme park resort on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, the industry was left with more questions than answers. Since then, Disney and its local partner Miral have remained relatively quiet about the attraction lineup, but the past few months have brought several significant developments that show the project is steadily moving forward.
Although construction of the Disney resort itself has not yet visibly begun, a series of announcements and strategic investments paint an increasingly clear picture of what the future destination will become.
Disney Confirms the Project Remains Fully on Track
One of the biggest updates came in May, when Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro addressed concerns about ongoing tensions in the Middle East. He confirmed that the company has not altered its plans for Yas Island and stressed that the project’s long-term strategic value remains unchanged.
Disney also reiterated its unique business model for the project. Unlike Disneyland Paris or Shanghai Disneyland, the Abu Dhabi resort will be entirely financed, built and operated by Miral, while Disney’s Imagineers oversee the creative design and guest experience. Disney will earn royalties rather than investing billions in construction itself.
Bob Iger Effectively Confirmed the Exact Site
Although Disney initially announced only that the resort would be located on Yas Island, Bob Iger later removed much of the remaining speculation.
Earlier this year, Disney’s CEO visited Abu Dhabi and shared photographs taken from the future project site, effectively confirming that the resort will be built in the Yas North area, adjacent to the existing entertainment district. The location provides direct access to major highways while leaving ample room for future expansion.
Yas Island Continues Expanding Around Disney
While Disney’s own project remains in its design phase, Miral has continued investing heavily across Yas Island.
The most notable announcement came in June, when Miral unveiled two new DC attractions for Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. One of them, Kryptonite Collider, opens this month, while the second attraction will be a major next-generation Superman flying roller coaster scheduled for completion in 2028.
Elsewhere on Yas Island, Yas Waterworld opened its large expansion featuring eleven new attractions earlier this year, while Topgolf Yas Island remains under construction.
These projects demonstrate that Miral is continuing to expand the island’s overall entertainment offering well before Disney opens its gates.
Infrastructure Around the Future Resort Is Growing
Perhaps the clearest sign of confidence came just days ago, when developers announced another major waterfront expansion on Yas Island.
The new Yas Point district will add hotels, restaurants, retail, beaches and approximately 1,600 residences immediately north of the existing entertainment area. Although not officially part of Disney, the project is widely seen as supporting the enormous increase in tourism expected once the Disney resort eventually opens.
The continued investment suggests Abu Dhabi is preparing not only for Disney itself, but for decades of tourism growth afterwards.
Still No Attractions… Yet
Despite the recent progress, Disney has still revealed virtually nothing about the park itself.
No themed lands have been announced, no attraction concepts have been unveiled and no official opening year has been confirmed. Disney continues to describe the destination as its most technologically advanced resort ever, blending Disney storytelling with Emirati culture in ways not seen at any previous Disney park.
For now, the project remains in its design phase, meaning fans will likely need to wait a little longer before Disney begins unveiling the experiences that will define its seventh global resort.
The Next Milestone
Although many enthusiasts were hoping for attraction announcements by now, the past few months have demonstrated that Disney Yas Island is far from a paper project. The exact location has effectively been confirmed, Disney has publicly reaffirmed its commitment despite regional uncertainty, and Miral continues transforming Yas Island into an even larger entertainment destination.
With surrounding developments accelerating throughout 2026, attention is now turning to the next major milestone: Disney’s first reveal of the park’s themed lands and attractions. That announcement is expected to be the moment the ambitious Abu Dhabi resort truly begins to take shape in the eyes of fans worldwide.
