Demolition and redevelopment work has begun at Tom Sawyer Island and surrounding areas in Magic Kingdom, as Walt Disney World moves forward with what it has described as the largest expansion in the park’s history. The expansion will introduce two major new themed lands: Piston Peak National Park, inspired by the Cars universe, and a dedicated Disney Villains land.
Piston Peak National Park Confirmed
Disney has confirmed that a new Cars-themed land, Piston Peak National Park, will be added to Magic Kingdom. Inspired by the landscapes and storytelling of the American frontier and national parks, the land will feature ranger facilities, lodge architecture, trails, waterways, and a new family attraction themed around off-road rally racing.
The setting continues the thematic progression of Liberty Square and Frontierland, connecting regional American architectural styles and natural environments into a cohesive frontier journey.
The area will incorporate “parkitecture” design principles — structures designed to blend into natural surroundings — and will be positioned alongside a waterway across from Grizzly Hall and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Closure of Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America
As construction accelerates, Tom Sawyer Island, the Rivers of America, and the Liberty Square Riverboat have now closed.
This marks the end of Tom Sawyer Island’s historical role within Frontierland, where it served as an exploratory play environment since the early years of the park.
The closure provides the expansion footprint for both Piston Peak National Park and future land development beyond Big Thunder Mountain.
Disney Villains Land Moving Forward
Disney has also confirmed development of the first dedicated Disney Villains-themed land.
This land will probably include two major attractions, dining, retail and a large-scale, immersive environment designed around iconic Disney antagonists.
The land was first discussed publicly during the D23 Expo “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” presentation and is now progressing into full development alongside Piston Peak.
A Multi-Year Transformation
Construction in this area begins this year. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will temporarily close and is expected to reopen next year with updated show elements. Additional entertainment and dining offerings will debut elsewhere in Magic Kingdom during the phased development.
More detailed information on Piston Peak National Park and the Villains land will be released as construction continues.
