Walt Disney World has announced a redevelopment project at Disney’s Hollywood Studios that will introduce new experiences centered on animation.
The initiative involves the repurposing of facilities formerly used for Star Wars Launch Bay and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! into a new area inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios campus in Burbank, California.
The existing structures will be redesigned to resemble the Roy E. Disney Animation Building. As part of the redesign, Mickey’s sorcerer’s hat will return to the park as a prominent visual feature.
New Guest Experiences Focused on Animation
The updated venue will include a screening theater and a gallery where animated characters are presented in the style of the short film “Once Upon a Studio.” Guests will also be able to participate in a drawing activity focused on well-known Disney characters and interact with character meet-and-greet opportunities. This experience appears similar in concept to the former Animation Academy.
A new indoor play area named Drawn to Wonderland will also be introduced. It is inspired by the concept art of Disney Legend Mary Blair for Alice in Wonderland.
Area Renamed and Timeline Announced
The area currently known as Animation Courtyard will be renamed The Walt Disney Studios to align with the updated theme. The new experiences are expected to debut in 2026. To facilitate construction, Animation Courtyard, Star Wars Launch Bay, and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will close on September 25, 2025.
The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure and the Walt Disney Presents gallery will remain open during the construction period.
